Even Super People Have Depression

“You have depression? But you are so happy!” “You have an eating disorder? But you are so pretty.” “You have OCD? But you seem so normal.”

This list could go on and on as people are confused by those with mental illness. Many of us do not fit an exact stereotype of our diagnoses. Even if we do, putting on a mask is one of the first things that we learn. You do not want others to know the confusion, chaos, and agony inside otherwise they might reject you.

The truth is that all types of people have mental illness. No one is too smart, pretty, wealthy, kind, rational, you insert whatever adjective to escape these disorders. No one. As this video shows, even a super hero can be depressed.

I have met people from all different walks of life. Some are rich while others live on the street, some play sports while others paint extraordinary portraits, some were elderly women while others were adolescent boys. Each of them showed characteristics of mental illness but also was unique.

No one is only simply a diagnosis. I am not my mental illness even though it is part of who I am.

Thus any type of person can have depression or another such disorder. It does not matter how strong or positive they seem; anyone can struggle with mental health. Even a super hero.

The video did make me smile! I had never given a thought to the type of problems a superhero might have, but then that’s the point.

I really like this post! It serves as a strong reminder to be conscious that people affected with mental illnesses all likely all around you, even though you don’t know it. (Yet, these people are still a whole lot more than their mental illnesses.)
