Lizzie Velasquez will never forget the day she came upon a YouTube video with 4 million views and thousands of mean comments naming her the “World’s Ugliest Woman.” She was only 17 years old.

“When I saw it my whole world just felt like it crashed at that moment,” Velasquez, 26, tells PEOPLE of the experience that inspired her new documentary A Brave Heart, which premiered on Saturday at SXSW in Austin, Texas. “I thought, how in the world can I ever pick myself up from this?”

But Velasquez – who weighs just 63 lbs. due to a rare syndrome that doesn’t allow her to gain weight – did just that by becoming an anti-bullying activist and motivational speaker.

    That’s just dumb – who would consider her ugly? I never really fell into the whole definition that society has put in as “beauty.” It’s a deeply rooted word we take for granted. This woman is beautiful in every meaning of the word. No, she doesn’t look like every other woman out there, but neither does that random neighbor next door, or myself. We each have our own looks and I think that this lady is brave for knowing the value she holds.

  4. You see it all of the time and all over the internet when you have blogs talking about the ugliest people and it is especially disturbing when done against the weak and infirmed. Even the Elephant man was not ugly but the people that creates such lists…
