One Thousand Thanks: 1155 – 1165. Writing

Typewriter

The typewriter of C.S. Lewis’s brother

At times, words seem to flood from my mind to my fingers and onto a page or computer screen. Other times, the phrases and concepts drip like a leaky faucet. Even that is better than when the water is turned off completely and nothing will come out at all.

Writing is never easy. Sure, it can be fun or a release. However, if you truly want to write, you will find the task very difficult at points. However, that should not scare you away because there are many positive elements. Here are some of them.

1155. Expressing yourself – Writing how I feel is often easier for me than saying it. Strangely enough, I can also better verbally express myself after writing about it.

1156. Being creative – You can make new worlds, new people, new things when writing. How cool and creative is that?

1157. Working through your past – I can use writing to deal with past hurts and fears. Whether personal essays or creative fiction, what you write comes from who you are. This makes it a great way to re-imagine life even if it is through a character.

1158. Finding just the right word – Getting the perfect word is such a great feeling! It is wonderful to put it down on paper after capturing it for your story, blog post, poem, etc.

1159. When the characters take over – For those who like to write fiction, it is wonderful when suddenly the characters seem to have a mind of their own. Instead of dictating their movements, you are listening to their desires and needs.

1160. Coming up with a new idea – New ideas come to me all the time – at church, work, walking. It is hard to know what to do with all of them. That is why I carry a notebook most places that I go.

1161. Learning from other writers – Whether you learn from reading someone’s book or hearing that person speak or just talking to him or her, gaining knowledge from another writer is a wonderful feeling.

1162. Having a favorite word – More like numerous favorite words. It happens.

1163. Having a favorite preposition, punctuation mark, etc. – Yes, this does happen. It is strange but slowly seems normal.

1164. The feeling of a keypad under your fingers – There are so many possibilities, so many ways that you can spend your time and fill the page with letters.

1165. Getting over writer’s block – This is only the best feeling in the world! Well, maybe not. However, it is a huge relief.

Sometimes when I’m done writing something, I look at it and wonder, “Where did that come from?”
