At times, words seem to flood from my mind to my fingers and onto a page or computer screen. Other times, the phrases and concepts drip like a leaky faucet. Even that is better than when the water is turned off completely and nothing will come out at all.

Writing is never easy. Sure, it can be fun or a release. However, if you truly want to write, you will find the task very difficult at points. However, that should not scare you away because there are many positive elements. Here are some of them.

Growing up overweight, I always hated hearing thin girls complain about their bodies. If they feel gross and dislike themselves, what must they think of me?

However, I kept my mouth shut and felt disgusted with myself. The years of anorexia changed that a bit. I am ashamed to admit that I began complaining about my weight and appearance more publically. Still, I tried hard to be positive so as not to trigger others.

I Am Versus I Feel

Right now, I am reading a wonderful book titled The Power of I Am by Joel Osteen. He states numerously the impact of our words and how they affect our lives.

For example, if you state that you are miserable, you are inviting that miserableness into your life. The same with being in debt, overweight, unhappy, etc. In a similar way, stating that you are blessed, healthy, financially secure, and joyful brings those things into your life.

What I Learned from NaNoWriMo 2015

How much different is writing from life?

In both we make decisions that carry us forward. Sometimes those choices work out well. Sometimes they drop us in a dead end. Mostly it is not clear where the choice leads, and so we carry on.

Writing 1667 words a day through November’s National Novel Writing Month forced me to look at every scene and imagine how it might move the story forward. Within the first few days, every scene, every action, nearly every word seemed full of, well, pivot. The story could turn 180 degrees—except the commitments my characters held worked time and again as a rudder, pulling their choices along a true direction.

Choice after choice makes the story. Along the way we interact with characters who enter the story because of our choices. And these characters…

Edify don’t mortify

What a great thought! What is your answer? Can you be honest with yourself?

Do you edify
Or mortify?
When you talk about others,
Do you elevate
Or downgrade?
When you talk about others,
Do you speak positively
Or negatively?

The tendency with many people when they talk about others is to speak negatively; to mortify instead of edify; to speak negatively instead of positively.

Speaking negatively about others does not help any one. Mortifying someone helps neither the one mortified nor the one who mortifies.
Thus, why spend precious time mortifying when there is so much good that can be praised?

When we see good things in others, and when others do good work, let us make them know. Instead of being profuse in our denigration, let us be profuse in our praise.

When people think of eating disorders, anorexia often comes to mind. Yet, this is the least common eating disorder. The death rate of those with it and horrifying effects of starving oneself, however, make it so well remembered, belittled, and strangely idolized.

Here are some quotes on this disorder I still sometimes fall into or long to have again. I chose words that are not too triggering but still honest. Therefore, these are not pretty quotes or happy words. Still, there is hope for healing even from this illness. One Negative = Five Positives

You can see the positives or the negatives, but it is hard when people point out the negatives more.

Ever notice that when you hear one negative thing you tend to hang onto it for a long period of time? What about the positives you are told? How long do you remember those?

Yesterday, someone told me that I looked “really bad” because of the sick-looking dark circles around my eyes. The rest of my break was spent wonderfully in the bathroom as I tried to fix my face without any makeup. When I returned a few minutes later to work, a coworker greeted me and stated, “You look so beautiful.” Yet another coworker stated the same thing about 30 minutes later.

Still, I am fretting over what I was first told. Similarly, the guests who are upset weigh on me heavily, making me sometimes forget all of the happy people that I smiled at, waved to, or helped.
